There’s a saying that goes something like: a haircut is as good as a holiday. And while those international borders are still shuttered, we’re quite prepared to take this as a new sort of gospel. Of course, it helps if the salon you’re visiting is as dreamy as a European vacation. Enter, Headcase Hair.

This standout Paddington salon is hardly new; founders John Pulitano and Vincent Nobile and their talented team have been at the top of the hair game in Sydney since opening their doors back in 1997. This month, however, the Headcase team has revealed a seriously stunning redesign of their salon.

To help them realise the redesign, Pulitano and Nobile enlisted the one-and-only Amanda Talbot of Studio Snoop—the interior designer responsible for some of Merivale’s most beautiful venues (Bert’s, Fred’s and The Paddington among them).

“We liked the fact that Amanda had never worked on a salon before ours,” explains Pulitano. “This forced us to completely deconstruct every inch of our existing space and rebuild it from scratch, putting hours and hours of thought and consideration into how we could make every facet function at its best.”

The result is a salon quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen. In a huge shift away from the stark, minimalist-style salons of the 90s, Headcase is warm, inviting, stylish, and, true to Talbot’s style, brilliantly detailed.

Putty pink walls have been made with a natural Japanese plaster called Otsumigaki, which absorbs toxins from the air. This is contrasted with beautiful jade green walls in the washroom and floor to ceiling arched windows that flood the space with natural light and provide a view out to a sandstone courtyard dotted with jade trees. Amber specked, cream-coloured terrazzo is seamless with jewel green marble, custom walnut joinery, and aged brass finishes.

Shelves are decorated with cream and coffee coloured earthware and minimal products, making you feel as though you’re in a luxurious European bathhouse or spa—a space to unwind and relax.

Cutting edge wellness and hairstyling technology blends in amongst the design details too. Like a custom moulded wash bench with space for 20 fully reclining Shiatsu Air Massage Italian chairs, and extra-large washbasins for the most comfortable rinse. Reverse cycle air conditioning constantly brings fresh, filtered air from outside in.

“From the cities we worked in, the fashion shows and photoshoots, and the health retreats we rested at, as well as all the people we met and built relationships with along the way. We wanted this new salon space to be a reflection of our journey, multi-layered and truly one of a kind,” Nobile and Pulitano said in a statement.
