Kendall Jenner Debuts Honey Caramel Hair On Instagram
DEC 02, 2020
While we tend to think of hair transformations as these dramatic, almost face-altering changes, sometimes, all you need is a tiny tweak to take your tresses to a new level. Don’t believe us? Just ask Kendall Jenner.
Having made a few subtle hair changes in quarantine, Jenner’s latest look, which she debuted on Instagram on December 1, is actually one that’s been steadily gaining popularity throughout the year: honey caramel hair.
A soft, light take on her usual deep brunette strands, Jenner’s take on honey caramel hair is as delicious-looking as it sounds. Sharing a selfie featuring her new locks on Instagram Stories, the model’s hair not only boasted a refreshed blend of mocha, cinnamon and, naturally, honeyed caramel hues, but significantly more length as well, with her hair falling to her waist.
While it’s unclear exactly when the flattering honey tones began trending, the colour has been on hairdressers’ radar throughout 2020, spiking after Jenner’s own sister, Kylie, sported the colour early in the year, and then again in September (see Instagram below).
The colour, which consists of having a rich, brunette base blended through with ligher tones of—you guessed it—honey and caramel, is actually considered one of the most flattering looks for warmer skin tones.
“Honey caramel is very flattering as it’s a warm hair colour, which gives the complexion warmth. It adds colour to the face, almost like a sun tan giving a ‘healthy’ glow,” Vincent Nobile, Colour Director and Co-Founder of Headcase Hair in Sydney, previously told ELLE.
“These tones can sometimes be very appealing in the winter months when we have a little less colour in our skin, or if we’ve been indoors a lot, as we have during COVID-19 isolation. These colours can sometimes feel like you’ve come back from vacation.”
Considering giving your tresses the honey caramel treatment? Be sure to chat to your colourist about your skin tone and work out whether you veer towards the neutral, warm or cool ends of the spectrum.
“The key to my honey caramel hair colours is to make them beautifully flattering to the type of complexion you have, and that the hues are customised to suit the individual. For example, an olive complexion needs to have a cooler shade of honey caramel, so as not to bring out yellow tones in the complexion,” Nobile advised.
If you don’t want to colour all of your hair, you can give the look a modern finish with a ‘money piece‘, otherwise known as adding a few face-framing strands that draw light to the face.
“Honey caramel highlights [is one], and the way to make this modern is with a honey face frame,” he added.
And for an even more sun-kissed finish? Channel a little JLo-esque balayage and start with “a deeper caramel” that transitions to a “lighter honey on the ends” for a “sun-kissed dimensional vibe”.
